BITSAT - Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test

Overview

BITSAT is the computer-based admission test of BITS Pilani for its undergraduate first-degree programs across its campuses - Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad. The test evaluates candidates in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (or Biology for certain courses), English proficiency, and logical reasoning. The syllabus is broadly based on 11th and 12th standard level (NCERT / equivalent). BITSAT allows candidates to attempt in multiple sessions (generally two per year), and selects on the basis of their performance in the test. The exam is meant to assess both conceptual clarity and speed & accuracy under time constraints, making it a competitive gateway to BITS Pilani’s various undergraduate programs.

Exam Pattern

  • Duration of exam: 3 hours(180 minutes)
  • No. of questions: 130 Questions
  • Marks distribution: Physics: 30 Questions, Chemistry: 30 Questions, Mathematics or Biology: 40 Questions (Biology for B.Pharm), English Proficiency & Logical Reasoning: 30 Questions.
  • Marking scheme: +3 marks for each correct answer, –1 mark for each incorrect answer, 0 for unattempted questions

Syllabus

  • Physics: Mechanics, Heat & Thermodynamics, etc.
  • Chemistry: Physical, Organic & Inorganic Chemistry; fundamentals like atomic structure, equilibrium, hydrocarbons, states of matter, etc.
  • Mathematics: Algebra, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Calculus, 3D Geometry, Linear programming (as per past patterns)
  • English Proficiency: Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Composition, etc.
  • Logical Reasoning: Verbal reasoning (analogy, series completion, classification, logical deduction), non-verbal reasoning (pattern perception, figure analysis, etc.)

Note: For B.Pharm (or courses with Biology), Biology topics (as per 12th standard) replace Mathematics in Part IV.

Exam Registration & Eligibility Details

  • Registration: Online application via official portal (uploading photo & signature, paying fee online/offline). Candidates may be allowed to appear in more than one session (commonly 2 in a year). Best score is taken for admission.
  • Eligibility : Must have passed or appearing in Class 12 (10+2) with the required subjects (PCM for B.E.; PCB/PCM for courses like B.Pharm or ESE). Minimum aggregate 75% marks in PCM (for Engineering) or PCB/PCM (as required) + at least 60% individually in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology in 12th standard. Only candidates from recent year (appearing or passed in immediate previous year) are eligible. For students with PCB (no Maths) — eligible only for B.Pharm or certain courses that allow Biology instead of Maths.
  • Documents Required : Scanned image of photograph, signature, 12th mark sheet / provisional certificate or admission-in-progress certificate if appearing, identity proof, etc.
  • Exam Fee : As per recent years: Male candidates: ₹3,400 for one session; ₹5,400 for both sessions. Female candidates: ₹2,900 for one session; ₹4,400 for both sessions.

Selection Process

After conducting the exam (or both sessions if attempted), BITS uses the best score for admission consideration. For certain state-board toppers (first rank), there may be direct admission even without BITSAT score, depending on year’s admission policy. Admission into specific programs is based on merit - BITSAT score + 12th marks as per eligibility and course-wise seat availability.
