JEE Advanced - Indian Institute of Technology Entrance Exam

Overview

JEE Advanced is one of India’s most prestigious engineering entrance exams, conducted for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the top performers of JEE Main are eligible to appear, making it one of the most competitive exams in the world. The test evaluates a student’s conceptual understanding, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam is held once a year in computer-based mode and consists of two compulsory papers. Its unique pattern focuses on application-based questions rather than direct formula-based solving. Successful candidates gain admission to B.Tech, B.S., Dual Degree, and Integrated M.Tech programs offered across all IITs. The exam is also recognized for admission to IISc, IISERs, IIST, and a few other institutions.

Exam Pattern

  • Duration of exam: 3 hours per paper (6 hours total)
  • No. of questions: Varies yearly (multiple sections in each paper
  • Marks distribution: Varies yearly; both papers include a mix of 1–4 mark questions
  • Marking scheme: Multiple-choice, multiple-select, numerical value questions, Variable marking, Partial marking (for MSQs in some years), Negative marking applies to several question types(Pattern changes yearly but the overall structure remains similar.)

Syllabus

  • Physics: Kinematics, Newton’s Laws, Work & Energy, Waves, Thermodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics, Electricity & Magnetism
  • Chemistry: Physical Chemistry (Equilibrium, Thermodynamics), Organic Chemistry (Reactions, Mechanisms), Inorganic Chemistry (Periodic Table, Coordination Compounds)
  • Mathematics: Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Vectors, Probability

Selection Process

Selection is based on performance in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 of JEE Advanced. Candidates are ranked according to aggregate marks, and admissions are conducted through the JoSAA counseling process, where students choose IIT campuses and programs based on rank, category, and seat availability. Final selection depends solely on JEE Advanced rank and seat allocation during counseling.

F.A.Q
