The Common Admission Test (CAT) is one of India’s most prestigious national-level entrance examinations conducted annually by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). It serves as the gateway for admission into MBA, PGDM, and other management-related postgraduate programs offered not only by the IIMs but also by more than 1000 top business schools across the country. CAT is a computer-based test designed to evaluate a candidate’s aptitude across areas such as quantitative ability, verbal ability, reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and data interpretation. The exam is known for its dynamic pattern, moderate-to-high difficulty level, and emphasis on time management and problem-solving skills.
a) Completed Bachelor’s degree with the required percentage of marks
b) Completed professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA (CMA)/Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI)) with required percentage
c) Should be in the final year of Bachelor’s degree with required percentage. SC/ST/PwD candidates should have a minimum 45%. For General, EWS and NC-OBC candidates, the minimum is 50%
The CAT selection process varies across institutions but generally involves three main stages: CAT score evaluation, Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI). IIMs and other top institutes shortlist candidates based on CAT percentile, academic profile, work experience, and diversity factors. The final merit list is prepared using a composite score that includes CAT percentile, performance in WAT/GD/PI, academic background, and other criteria set by the institution.
