Master of Arts (MA) in Social Entrepreneurship

The Master of Arts in Social Entrepreneurship (MASE) at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a pioneering programme launched in 2007 by the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship (CSE). It is designed to develop social entrepreneurs and change-makers who can address pressing societal and environmental challenges through innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable solutions.
The programme offers an interdisciplinary curriculum covering economics, sociology, public policy, entrepreneurship, venture creation, and management principles. It blends theoretical learning with field-based experiential exposure, enabling students to understand real-world problems and design impactful, scalable solutions.
A key strength of the programme is its strong focus on hands-on venture creation, supported by incubation initiatives such as the TISS Incube Foundation (TIF). Students are guided through the life cycle of enterprise development—from idea generation and venture creation to growth and scaling—while applying both effectual (entrepreneurial) and causal (managerial) approaches.
The programme equips students with entrepreneurial skills, leadership capabilities, and social sensitivity, preparing them to launch social enterprises or drive innovation within organisations. Graduates go on to create impactful ventures and contribute to sectors such as social development, sustainability, public policy, and impact consulting.
